Ammermüller secures pole position in Monaco

Michael Ammermüller (Lechner MSG Racing Team) has claimed pole position in qualifying for the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup race in Monte Carlo/Monaco. At the wheel of his 485 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, the German turned the fastest lap on Friday in a time of 1:34.305 minutes on the legendary street circuit on the Côte d’Azur. “That’s already half the battle won. I hope I finish in the same position on Sunday. I drove 110 percent today, in fact, I was even a little scared of myself,” said Ammermüller with a wink. Lining up alongside the Bavarian on the first grid row is Porsche Junior Dennis Olsen (N/Walter Lechner Racing Team), who posted the second fastest qualifying time. Daniel Cammish (GB/Lechner MSG Racing Team) takes up the race from third.

With 28 starters fighting for the best times, the qualifying session in Monaco was yellow-flagged many times. At the beginning of the session, Olsen managed to turn the fastest lap but, over the course of the 30-minute qualifying, Ammermüller nudged him from the time charts. The seasoned Porsche specialist, who travelled to Monaco as the championship leader after winning both Barcelona rounds, found an answer to the strong opposition every time. In the last five minutes, the fight culminated in a last ditch shootout, with Ammermüller ultimately gaining the upper hand. “That was exciting,” concluded 21-year-old Olsen. “I drove extremely close to the guardrails, but I didn’t get any scratches on the wing mirrors. In the end second place is what came out of it, although I was still good for another a fast lap.”

Daniel Cammish (GB/Lechner MSG Racing Team) perfected the top results for the Lechner team. “This is my first time driving at Monaco so I’m thrilled about my third place. My heart almost stopped several times when I almost kissed the walls. Everything turned out okay in the end and my nine-eleven is still in one piece. I can’t wait for the race on Sunday,” said the two-time champion of the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain. Zaid Ashkanani (MRS GT-Racing) from Kuwait qualified his Porsche on position four.

Porsche Junior Matt Campbell (AUS/Fach Auto Tech) takes up the race from the fifth grid spot. The 22-year-old from Warwick in Queensland, Australia, competes in Monaco for the first time but was not particularly pleased with his qualifying performance: “I encountered traffic on the track, plus I made a couple of very small mistakes. Still, I can’t be too unhappy with fifth and I’m excited to see what the race on Sunday brings.” The Italian Daniele di Amato (Dinamic Motorsport) turned the sixth fastest lap on the 3.340-kilometre circuit.

In the newly created League of Nations, Germany holds the best cards in the race thanks to Ammermüller’s qualifying effort. After two of eleven rounds, Germany leads the classification with 40 points, followed by Norway with 36 points. Great Britain (30 points) ranks third, following by Australia (28 points).

The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup celebrates a very special anniversary in Monaco: For the last 25 years, the one-make race series has been contested in Monaco as support to Formula 1. In 1993, Mika Häkkinen won the Porsche race in Monte Carlo as a VIP guest driver. On Sunday, 28 May, the 261st race will take off at 9.45 hours. Monaco hosts the third round of this season’s Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. As a service to the fans the race can now be watched via a live streaming platform on www.racecam.de. Eurosport broadcasts the race in 60 countries. Viewers of the television channel can follow the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup live in Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy.
